Interview with Dr. Guo: How 3D vision leads the new wave of medical beauty
Founder's vision
Technology is the foundation of an enterprise, and Dr. Guo, who has been in business for nearly 10 years, has a deep understanding of this. Before starting his own business, Dr. Guo worked as a senior executive in a well-known multinational company. Years of deep industry experience allowed him to proactively capture the market potential of 3D visual perception technology.
Traditional 2D vision can only provide planar information, while 3D vision can provide three-dimensional geometric information, enabling more accurate position measurement, volume calculation, shape analysis, intelligent decision-making, etc. It can be said that 3D visual perception technology is crucial to many emerging industries.
From 3D vision to skin care innovation
In 2015, I decided to establish Qingdao U Technology (Utech). I formed a team of top talents in optics, MEMS (micro-electromechanical systems), algorithm design and embedded systems. Together, we pioneered the application of MEMS micromirror technology to 3D structured light vision modules - compact, efficient and extremely accurate.
Our early breakthroughs in industrial automation and deep-sea imaging proved our technological prowess. In fact, we developed a deep-sea imaging camera for China’s Jiaolong manned submersible that was able to capture clear images at depths of more than 7,000 meters. This project was a true milestone.
💡 Discovering a New Market: Digital Medical Aesthetics
In 2018, while experimenting with 3D structured light technology for facial recognition, I discovered an unexpected opportunity. What if this technology could be applied to skin care and medical aesthetics?
Most Skin Analyzers on the market still use outdated 2D imaging technology. These devices lack depth data and cannot provide volume measurement, wrinkle analysis, or 3D simulation. At that moment, I realized that this was a huge, untapped market - and Utech was uniquely positioned to lead it.
We developed a 3D Skin Analyzer that can complete a 180° facial scan in just 8 seconds and then reconstruct a highly accurate 3D facial model. With our AI algorithms, it can assess pores, pigmentation, skin texture, and even simulate surgical effects - a truly disruptive technology for beauty clinics, dermatologists, and beauty brands.
Today, our devices are deployed in hundreds of hospitals, medical aesthetic clinics, and beauty salons around the world. We are proud to say that more than 95% of other 3D skin analyzer products on the market use core components developed by Utech.
🔍 The technology behind it
What makes our 3D vision modules different?
They are small, low-power, cost-effective, and extremely accurate - not only for skin analysis, but also for broader applications such as mobile health devices and smart beauty terminals.
Utech is more than just a hardware provider. We have a full stack of technology:
Proprietary 3D imaging algorithms
MEMS-based optical scanning hardware
Embedded systems and AI diagnostic engines
Multi-language, multi-scenario software platform
We use this to ensure clinical-grade accuracy and user-friendly interactive experience.
Expanding business through strategic partnerships
In 2025, we signed a strategic partnership with Cardinal Health Group, a subsidiary of Shanghai Pharmaceutical Group, to integrate our technology into a wider range of healthcare applications, including general practitioner physical examinations and digital dermatology platforms.
As global demand for AI-driven personalized skincare and beauty technologies continues to grow, we believe Utech is in the right place at the right time.
Conclusion
People often ask me: Why did you move from industrial imaging to skincare?
For me, it was not a leap, but a natural evolution. Skin is one of the most complex, intuitive and emotional parts of the human body. Helping people see and understand their skin more clearly means helping them make better decisions - whether it is about treatment, confidence or care.
At Utech, we don't just build machines, we build trust between people and technology.
